Saffrey Brown

General Manager, Jamaica National Building Society Foundation

Saffrey Brown is the dynamic and innovative leader of the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) Foundation, which was established in 1990 to execute the philanthropic efforts and wider corporate social responsibility initiaives of the JN Group.

Since 2008, Saffrey has managed and overseen the mandate of the Foundation. In her role, she works with internal and external partners to identify, develop and provide technical and financial support to projects and programmes that focus on issues relating to rural development, health, housing, education, youth, community and safety both at the community and at the national level.

Saffrey led the conceptualisation and implementation of numerous outreach programmes, chief among them the social enterprise called, The Source, a chain of community resource centres. She followed this ground breaking social franchise with another social enterprise project – the Social Enterprise Boost Initiative, aimed at strengthening the social enterprise sector.

With 15 years of extensive experience in development work, Saffrey specialises in the conceptualisation and delivery of social enterprise and economic projects, education and training initiatives, community grant schemes and has effectively implemented urban regeneration programmes in Jamaica and the United Kingdom.

In the United Kingdom, she was Community Resource Manager, and Neighbourhood Manager with Poplar HARCA, a Housing and Regeneration Company. She also worked with the UK government to successfully launch a social enterprise, the New Deal for Communities initiative, which is credited as one of the most intensive and innovative community involvement programmes undertaken in London. In Jamaica, she worked with the Kingston Restoration Company to improve inner-city and underserved communities in the corporate area.

Saffrey has a successful track record in project management and is also an expert in forging partnerships and creating sustainability, having worked for non-governmental and third party organisations as well as in the private sector. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Geography from The University of the West Indies, Mona and a Certificate in Business Excellence from Columbia Business School.
